My name is James, and I am a student photographer passionate about capturing the world around me. I have been taking photos since 2022, and it has quickly become an integral part of my life, inspiring me to pursue a career in this field. While I primarily focus on wildlife photography, I have recently begun to explore portraits and other styles as well. This course has enabled me to incorporate photography into my daily routine, transforming it from a mere hobby into a central aspect of my life. I initially enrolled in level 2 media production before transitioning to level 3 photography & film a few months later. This website showcases all the work I have completed during my college journey, and I invite you to take your time to explore it.

The Lee Miller Exibition

The Indestructible Lee Miller' Celebrates a Daring Surrealist and War Photographer - The New York Times

Lee Miller in Hitler’s Bathtub, Munich, Germany, April 30, 1945

What do I notice first?

At first glance this is just a normal photo of a woman in a bath, but their is so much more meaning to this photograph. Without context, the things I noticed first would be that their is a woman in a bath clearly washing off lots of dirt as shown on the carpet and a portrait of hitler on the side.

How do I think she created this effect?

The effect of the photo is very impactful as it displays the horrific acts of volience comited under Hitler’s control. And by simply seeing these sights Lee miller has to wash away the dirt which simbolizes the blood and cruelty commited at consentrasion camps as she has just visited one.

The fact that she took this photo on the same day Hitler died it shows the healing process has started and they need to wash away the horrifying effects and memories of the acts commited.

What feeling does this image create?

This photo creates an negitive emotional feeling of horror and sadness but also has one positive effect that Lee miller is a civillan is having a bath in Hitler’s apartment.

Who was Lee Miller? Why the model-turned-war photographer is finally getting her due | CNN

Debris on pavement outside, Saint-Malo, Brittany, France, 1944

What do I notice first?

That the image shows the effect of war on civilians. and it shows death and distruction and people getting in the crossfire of war.

How do I think she created this effect?

She has perposely placed a line of bullets for a machine gun in someone boot. The effect is sadness as the boot simbolizes someone that has died (probably a civilian) because of the war and the fact we have no idea who this person is shows the effects of war are beyond our imagination that people that have died we don’t even know who they are. The debris also show the distruction of war.

What feeling does this image create?

Sadness and mystery. Sadness due to the effects of war on civilians and mystery on who the person may be or weather they are alive.

Lee Miller was the bravest person I ever knew': The pioneering photographer who captured the horror of World War Two

Women with Fire Masks, Downshire Hill, London, England (1941)

What do I notice first?

The masks are intimidating and it makes the women look scary in a way. The photo is showing woman making masks for fires to reduce the brightness in the eyes.

How do I think she created this effect?

The masks make the women look scary which could be Lee Miller saying that women are fully capable of being as useful and as scary as men are. She has made this effect by showing women being useful in a sexist time where women were discrimated against.

What feeling does this image create?

Sadness and happiness which are polar opposites but the image has a sad effect that show that a message is needed to make people realise that women are capable of doing tasks then men do because this should be common sense. Happy because Lee Miler is getting this message across in a time were it’s needed.

One thing that I will steal from Lee Miller is her Surrealist Composition & Framing

These photos I have used Lee Millers B&W + Dramatic Effects

How did I create her effect?

I looked at Lee Miller art using B&W and I loved the emotive effect the lack of colour the photos had so I knew I needed to use B&W. These are replicating Lee Milers portart photography and they have the same intence emotive effect her photos do.

What went well?

The photos went well and the emotive effect I was seeking for has carryed though and lead to my photos having a striking look.

What would I Impove?

I would use people for the portrates to fully replicate her style.
